Venue Hunt: Restaurant Weddings

Restaurants make awesome venues for smaller wedding receptions.  They have great ambiance, delicious food, and are perfect for the couple that wants something a little more low key.  The bonus is that they require little to no decor, and they include all the service staff and rentals you might need at a more traditional venue.  The following restaurants would be great for a less formal reception, a brunch reception following a morning ceremony, or even just a rehearsal dinner.

Baur’s Ristorante Excellent ambiance, and the food presentation is top notch.

Firenze a Tavola A smaller venue, this restaurant is best suited for smaller parties or rehearsal dinners.

Kevin Taylor’s at the Opera House Hardwood floors, a starlight ceiling, and a gorgeous bar.  This place also has space for a small ceremony. View full post »

Engagement Contest: Share your story!

It was hard not to notice him.  At 6’5″, sporting a full beard and red plaid flannel pants, he was hard to miss. He tried to slink into the back of my yoga class unnoticed, having arrived a few minutes late.  I had just begun teaching that evening’s class when he came in, and I immediately worried he wouldn’t know a thing about yoga.  Let’s just say plaid flannel pants are an oddity in yoga classes.  To my surprise, he knew his down dog from his up dog, and proved to be an excellent student.  At the end of class he complimented me for having a soothing yoga voice, paid for his class, and left with the friend who brought him.  And that was that.

Until he came to my class the following week.  And the week after that.  For nearly 15 consecutive weeks he came to my Tuesday night class, often in those red plaid pants.  We made small talk, we chatted with friends, we flirted a bit.  Once he even brought me a mix CD of new yoga tunes – which convinced me he had a little crush on me.  (To this day he denies having a crush on the yoga teacher, but I don’t believe him.  My nerd-crush radar is excellent.)  Then one day he came in, sans beard, with a clean haircut and cute new glasses.  It was a nerd transformation I couldn’t resist, so I asked him out for smoothies after class.  It went well.  Really well.  A year and a half later we got engaged in Uruguay, and this November we’ll be married in Denver.

So that’s my story – time to share yours.  How did you meet your fiance (or soon-to-be fiance)?   I want to hear all the details – I love a good story :)  Even if you don’t think it’s that great, send it anyway!  It might be cuter than you think.  The best story wins a free engagement session and an 8×10 print of your favorite image! The deadline is July 30th. The only rule is that you have to be available to do a session in Denver or the surrounding area in the month of August.  Send your email to tracy@tracycarolyn.com.  I can’t wait to read your entry, and share it here!

Ha, love it! I’d heard the story, but not in that much detail. Thanks for sharing!

Laurie - July 7, 2010 - 6:05 pm

I don’t have a story (yet!), but you know how I love to hear ‘em! Please, please tell me I can help judge! I didn’t get the chance last time.

Deposit Policy

As of July 15, 2010, this will be the new deposit policy for Tracy Carolyn Photography.

Portraits A $50 deposit is due when you book your session date.  This deposit will be applied to your session fee, and is non-refundable.  It is transferrable, however, should you need to reschedule your appointment.  The remaining balance is due the day of your session.

Weddings and Events A deposit of 30% is due with a signed contract to reserve your date.  This deposit is non-refundable.  The remaining balance is due two weeks prior to the event.

Boudoir Marathons A $50 deposit is required to book your time slot on a marathon day.  Any hair and makeup fees will be due upfront, since I pay the stylist in advance.  This deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable.

Thanks for wading through the boring business stuff.  Since everything is better with a photo, here’s an engagement favorite :)

What to wear, what to wear…

For many people this can be one of the most thought-provoking parts about taking portraits.  I get more questions about what to wear than about anything else.  Don’t stress – here are some tips to help!

Don’t do matchy-matchy. The whole everyone in white tops and jeans things is played out.  When you go all out for matching outfits it makes your portraits look overplanned and a little cheesey, not to mention unrealistic.  When was the last time your whole family went to a social function in matching outfits?  Probably never.  So steer clear.

Stay in the same color family. While you shouldn’t get decked out in the same shirt, you can stay in the same color family. Try having everyone in an outfit that incorporates the same color – blues, browns and grays work well.  It doesn’t have to be the same shade, just the same palette.  That way you’ll look like you fit together, but not like clones.

Choose a level of formality. Decide if you want a more formal or casual look, and make sure everyone’s outfit is on the same level.  You don’t want everyone in dress pants except for one kiddo in jeans.  I highly recommend staying casual, but if you want to dress up be sure everyone does. Boudoir Marathon

The two girls who made it to their appointments rocked it.  Completely rocked it.  And thank goodness they did, or I might be swearing off boudoir shoots forever, because to be honest, this last weekend’s boudoir marathon was a bit of a train wreck.

Going into the week I had 5 appointments for hair, makeup and shooting.  But by Wednesday, I was down to just three girls, as people decided to cancel last minute.  The day of, one girl was a complete no-show.  I have never ever had that happen before – everyone who has committed to their appointments has shown up, excited and ready to go.  The makeup artist and I were devastated.  I’ve never required deposits or contracts for boudoir before because no one has ever taken advantage of it.  This will no longer be the case.

To the two of you who came, on time, to your appointments – thank you so, so much.  I had a blast shooting your sessions, and would gladly work with you again for anything.  They were two of the best boudoir shoots to date, but because they each asked that I not post anything from their shoots, this image is from the last boudoir session in April.

This marathon didn’t run smoothly, but I’ll still be doing boudoir sessions because they truly are a lot of fun.  I’ll be launching a boudoir website later this month – stay tuned!
